Here is an explanation of his coat of arms
His Motto: Believe in the Good News. He chose this from the beginning of Mark’s Gospel. 120 times this is referred to in the Gospels—90 times from the lips of Jesus, Himself. Obviously this is of great importance and was the heart of Jesus’s ministry. It is also the last phrase in the Gospel & you haveto really “believe” in order to follow Him. On the left side, always of the Crest of a diocese, and in Duluth it is a blue background with a gold cross. The right side is Bishop Felton’s: there are four parts. The first is a glass cutter: his grandfather, Dad and he are all glazers, so he has included this in his symbols. Then, this is the year of St. Joseph to whom he has a great devotion (to the Sleeping St. Joseph). The white lily is in honor of St. Joseph. Below the lily is the symbol of Mary who unties knots to whom he also has a great devotion. He believes his job is to be the doer of untying knots so the Holy Spirit can do his work. Lastly, are the two waves, symbolic of Lakes Michigan & Superior. In his 40 years since his ordination (June 13, 1981) he has always been by water, so he is acknowledging that in his heraldic crest.
